The Early Childhood Center of Professional Development Coaching Project is designed to coach classroom teachers and programs achieve the highest level of quality for children and families. Coaches are assigned to programs regionally and recommended to programs by the Illinois State Board of Education as another form of professional development to teaching staff.
Early Childhood Coaches have a minimum of a Bachelor’s (Masters preferred) in education, child development, social work, or related field with a minimum of 5 years experience as a preschool teacher, director, or early childhood leader. Coaches have experience with implementing change and are knowledgeable about early care, education, classroom environments, scheduling, implementation of developmentally appropriate practices, the early learning standards, licensing standards as well as have a basic understanding of various scientifically based curricula and assessment approved for use in an ISBE Preschool for All programs. Coaches have the skills to accurately and quickly assess the quality of care of a program, and are able to develop and maintain timelines, and provide technical assistance and support, while communicating recommendations effectively. Candidate must be adept in dealing with diverse cultures, communities, be available to travel to programs, and lift up to 30 pounds. Finally, candidate will possess a working knowledge of computers and software, and be a skilled writer able to document and complete written communications.
Coaches are required to attend an initial two-day training and orientation in order to be certified as a coach as well as attend monthly meetings to continue their professional development.
